Securing the Future of Local Journalism in Hancock County

The Acadia Newspaper Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, strengthening, and sustaining independent local journalism in Hancock County, Acadia National Park, and the Downeast region of Maine.

We believe that strong communities depend on trusted local news. Through stewardship, education, philanthropy, and community engagement, the Trust works to ensure that future generations continue to have access to reliable, independent reporting that informs citizens, strengthens civic participation, and preserves the stories of our communities.

More than 55 million Americans now live in communities with little or no local news coverage. Once a newspaper closes, it is rarely replaced.

Why Local Journalism Matters

Local newspapers such as The Ellsworth American and Mount Desert Islander do more than report the news. They document community history, hold public institutions accountable, inform voters, celebrate local achievements, and provide a shared source of trusted information.

Across the country, thousands of local newspapers have closed or been absorbed by distant corporate owners. As local news disappears, communities often experience lower civic engagement, reduced government transparency, and increased misinformation.

Acadia Newspaper Trust was created to ensure communities in Hancock County and Downeast Maine continue to have access to independent local journalism, civic information and the historical record local newspapers provide.

By building a permanent community-based support system for local journalism, we can protect an essential public service for generations to come.

Mission Statement

Acadia Newspaper Trust’s mission is to secure the future of community news in Hancock County, Acadia National Park, and the Downeast region by empowering local journalism through education, resources, and advocacy. Acadia Newspaper Trust supports a thriving, independent press that strengthens our communities, informs citizens, and upholds the vital role of local journalism across the region.

Why a Nonprofit Model?

The nonprofit model allows community members, foundations, businesses, and philanthropic partners to invest directly in the future of local journalism.

Our focus is not maximizing profits. Our focus is maximizing community impact.

Every contribution helps strengthen reporting, support local journalists, expand educational initiatives, preserve community history, and ensure that trusted local news remains available to all.

Local newspapers create a shared understanding of community life. Without them, communities become less connected and less informed.
